How to dial internationally
If you don't know how to make international calls, here are a few helpful tips:
- Make sure you have the correct number: most of the failed international connections are due to misdialling. Double check the country code and city code.
- You might need to drop 1-2 digits from the number. Usually, if a number starts with a 0 after the country code, you should drop it. It is part of the city code and it is only dialled when the call is made through a direct line from the country, without using a calling card. Known exceptions from this rule are Italy and Russia - in this case, usually the number after the country code starts with a 0 (if it is a local number and not a cell phone).
- Don't use a city code if you're dialing to a mobile phone. Unless you're calling a cell phone in the United States, where you have to have an area code for every number, all other cell phone numbers do not require a city code.
- Calls to international locations (other than the United States) need to be dialled in this format: 011+country code + city code (where required)+number. When you're dialing TO the United States, just dial 1+area code + number.
